The Specimen

Some plants reveal their identity immediately. Others take their time.

I bought the mother plant from a local nursery as a young Monstera ‘Burle Marx’s Flame’. During its earliest years in my collection, it grew without the dramatic leaf divisions that label suggested.

After approximately eighteen months, I began to see its foliage change. Continued growing, observation and conversations with other collectors led me to reconsider it as the horticultural form commonly called Monstera ‘Sierrana’.

Today, this top cutting from the mother plant displays an elegant progression of broad green foliage and increasingly sculptural fenestrations.

The Foliage

Deep green, gently textured leaves unfold around a prominent central vein. As the plant develops, its leaf margins separate into increasingly pronounced divisions, creating the architectural silhouette for which Sierrana-type Monsteras are collected.

Its newest mature-looking leaves already display this developing character, with further progression dependent on growing conditions and maturity.

PG Collector · Exact Plant · $125.00

The specimen photographed is the specimen offered. It is a top cutting from my established mother plant, presented in its current nursery container with climbing support.

The plant’s aerial roots are not currently attached to the moss pole. This does not establish that the cutting is unrooted. Shipping arrangements may require separation or adjustment of that support to protect the foliage and root system. The plant’s precise rooting condition and shipping readiness must be verified before dispatch.

Growing Notes

Provide bright, indirect light, an airy and well-draining aroid substrate, and warmth with moderate to elevated humidity.

Allow the upper growing medium to begin drying between thorough waterings, avoiding prolonged waterlogging.

This is a climbing Monstera. A moss pole or other suitable vertical support can encourage aerial-root attachment and more developed foliage over time.

Protect from freezing temperatures, strong direct afternoon sun, and sudden environmental changes.

Provenance

I have cultivated the mother plant for several years in Harlem, New York.

I originally bought the mother plant from a local nursery under the name Monstera ‘Burle Marx’s Flame’. Its later growth and conversations with other collectors led me to identify it as a Sierrana-type Monstera.

This identification reflects its present morphology and growing history; original nursery lineage and clone provenance have not been independently confirmed.

The exact specimen is a top cutting retained from my mother plant.
